I have to leave in 15 minutes to take Mary to the Doctor (yes again) but this was what I thought when I was getting ready and driving to work this morning No Dad it does not involve anyone naked - it is a setting on my camera – (OK now Dad has clicked the X and is checking to see if Maria’s blog has been updated.) So for the rest of you I am seriously deciding whether to change the setting on my camera from JPG to RAW. It takes more disk space and I will need to edit each one in Photoshop as they just don’t automatically show a picture on the computer like a jpg. Now if my husband read my blog he would say “This sounds like more time and more money - seems like a bad idea. In fact if you have more time I can think of several things you can do for me and if you want to spend more money… there are more rifles I could use.” OK now we lost Jim . Now for my diehard readers the reason I am considering this so strongly is the larger file size means there is so much more to it than a jpg where this and that gets lost in the compression. Think of it this way if its half the size I am losing a lot right? Any of you who really know me know I am always on the quest for the perfect picture. In the old days I would shoot up rolls of film for one awesome picture of Jim skiing which by the way doesn’t look so awesome now. This photo editing class has my head swimming, every picture I see in my books I now think – what if I had edited that one a little more? Now is has come to me - my legacy is 50 scrapbooks that one of my great grandchildren are going to complain about not having room for… I am wondering why I do this? Are all my scrapbooks going to end up in an attic, or a basement or worse the trash? Great now I am depressed…

Shooting in RAW

Here is my definition of RAW. The picture looks like the actual person you are photographing. Cameras are more realistic in picture quality, and the true image of what you are shooting than they ever have been. Why do you have to edit a picture unless its for redeye? Do you have to make a brown dirty creek appear as blue as a beach in Hawaii? If you don't like the way I look naturally, don't take my picture. I always thought the candid shots of the kids were better than the ones taken by the professional photographers. Are you going to edit and air brush Mary's pictures to make her look like Jessica Simpson? Of course I still think music sounded better on the scratchy 45 records than the new digitally remastered DVD's. Then what do I know?
Aren't you afraid that your grandchildren won't recognize all the pretty people in the pictures because they don't look like the real people.
Here is my final, and most important question. Will the RAW image make it easier to edit the pacie out of Mary's mouth?
My work is done here. Have a good weekend.
Oh one more thing. Whatever happened to that Courtney kid? Is she still around? I never see anything in the blog about her.
I think you should just get a size 16 card (they have come down a lot in cost) and use the RAW AND JPEG setting. That is what I have been thinking about. Then you have the RAW for when you want it but have the JPEG for when you don't need RAW. Just an idea...why pick one when you can have both. Does Canon have the both option? Nikon does, so I figure Canon does also.
Bob...we are leaving for CO at 4:00am! You should come see us in Steamboat!! ;)
Liz, you are so funny. Looks like you didn't get rid of Dad, good response Bad Papa.
You girls always take good pictures and I think it may have been more fun when I got lots of pictures from you.
Whats wrong with Mary that you are headed to the doctor again? I'm sure you just need to send her to Nana to get her well in Arizona for you like Courtney at that age. Courtney got better instantly in Arizona with me. Wish Grandma Smalling was here to bring Mary to me like she did Courtney.
Miss you all.
Nana
